Episode 01: BJ Woodworth, The Open Door

BJ Woodworth is the founding pastor of The Open Door NCD (New Church Development) in Pittsburgh, PA. This episode begins with a general introduction to the presbymergent podcast by Karen Sloan. It then follows BJ to traffic court, contains an interview with BJ at his local vegetarian diner, and shares a poem he wrote in systematic theology class.

Vera White

Episode 02: Vera White, Pittsburgh Presbytery

Vera White is the Pittsburgh Presbytery Director of New Church Development, Stewardship, and the Committee on Ministry. This episode has two main themes that Vera develops in her sharing: presbymergent oriented leadership and presbytery-wide support of presbymergent NCDs. Vera’s role in Pittsburgh Presbytery provides a valuable collection of wisdom for any PC(USA) leader or governing body engaging with presbymergent.

Interspersed among this episode’s pictures are paintings from the walls of a tattoo parlor, created by an artist connected to one of the Presbytery’s NCDs. (BTW if you look with care at the picture that resembles ‘The Last Supper,’ you will realize why it is called ‘The Last Tattoo.’)

Bonus! Open Door – Union Project tour

An extra track to Episode 01: BJ Woodworth, The Open Door

(Click to listen below or download MP3 here)

The Open Door NCD offices and worship space are housed in a traditionally beautiful church building that has been revitalized through a number of untraditional choices in utilizing all of the various spaces in the building. In this twelve minute clip, beginning at the Open Door offices, BJ Woodworth provides a guided tour through the previous church spaces – Christian Education rooms, senior pastor’s office, library, sanctuary, narthex, fellowship hall, and even the basement – describing the activities that currently take place in those spaces. For more information about the organization that owns and runs this building, The Union Project, check out their website.

Pittsburgh, through massive population decreases because of economic decline, has a number of boarded-up houses, office buildings, and other spaces, including churches. One of the strangest experiences I (Karen) had while visiting Pittsburgh was eating dinner in a Catholic church building that’s now a gorgeous restaurant & brewery. (Thanks Bob!) In places where a strong Christendom presence is waning, what will this mean for church buildings? And what will this mean for the Church?

For the Open Door NCD, being a part of the Union Project means they are far more integrated into their neighborhood’s vibe and they are spending less of their financial budget on facilities.
