A Tutorial on Increasing Authenticity

Here on Presbymergent, we want to continue to find ways to enhance authenticity, something that is always difficult to foster & maintain on an online community. One way that we can do that is to use our first and last names on the posts that we submit. After browsing through our User List (which is up to 97 people right now!), I see that many people have picked a “username” but for many people, that is a “nickname” or a login name that you probably use on a variety of places online. So, I’d encourage you to take a few minutes to follow this tutorial which will guide you through making a change in your WordPress account that will allow your name to show up properly on the website.

Tutorial
1. Login to WordPress here.
2. Select the Users Tab and select “Your Profile.”
3. You will then see Your Profile and Personal Options, as well as various boxes to fill in for your first and last name.
4. Fill in the First Name and Last Name boxes.
5. IMPORTANT: Below the Nickname box, you’ll see a drop-down menu that says Display name publicly as. Click on the drop-down and select the option that displays your name as FIRST NAME / LAST NAME.
6. Click on the button on the right that says “Update Profile.”

Then whenever you Write a Post on this website, below your post, it will give your full name as the author of the article. Again, this probably takes a minute at most to do, so I’d encourage you to do this.

Presbymergent Design

As this community continues to develop with all of these great posts and contributions, we’d also like to begin a bit of a “redesign” process and shape the look of this site into something a little more fitting for our community. There was a post during the first week of our discussion about looking for people who might be interested in helping out with a WordPress template design.

I volunteered to help out and now I’m looking for any additional input people have for this site. I’d love ideas for the “look”, whether that comes in the form of comments or even some graphics you might want to throw together. I’ll try to take these into account and begin working on the design over the next few weeks, hopefully.

Feel free to email me any comments or ideas, or post them as comments here. Thanks!

Story about Atlanta “Alternative” NCD Commision

Greetings!

I wanted to share a brief story – one that I shared with some of you that came to Atlanta for the Mainline Emergent Conference. I was asked by one of you to share it through this new (and great!) site.

ME: So, I’m a 33 year old PCUSA minister and I want to start an “emergent” NCD in urban Atlanta.

Presbytery of Greater Atlanta: We have a newer commision called the “Tri-Presbytery (Atlanta, N. Georgia, Athens) Alternative NCD Commission”.

Story: So, I recently met with Rev. Joanna Adams, the chair of the “Alternative NCD Commission” and shared with her my interest in starting such an “alternative” NCD”. We had a great conversation and she was very helpful in connecting my story [recently having had experienced an unhealthy call that also led to the dissolution of my marriage] to the hope of beginning a new community for, well, broken people like myself who are seeking healing and transformation.

What was so cool about the conversation was when Joanna Adams said to me [paraphrased], “You know, I don’t know a thing about this whole Emergent thing. However, the reason why I am on this commission is because I want to help open doors for people like yourself”.

Refecting on this conversation, I have come to see the following things:

1. How unique it is that my presbytery has such an “Alternative NCD Commission” – one that has money set aside through a successful capital campaign to start such new “emergent” NCDs.

2. The humility that Joanna, as a seasoned and highly respected PCUSA minister, showed in admitting her own ignorance about this whole emergent thing. I believe that many of those “seasoned” ministers at the Mainline Emergent Conference could learn a thing or two from Joanna’s example. Emergent needs to reach out to those for whom Emergent “makes sense” and also form partnerships with people like Joanna – people who can “open doors”!

It is my hope that the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta may help in forming a framework or process for beginning such “alternative NCDs”. We are currently working on putting this process together and will report our findings at the November presbytery meeting this year.

Would love to hear what you think…

Mainline/Emergents

I was hoping to be there with some of you this week. But due to a few circumstances, like not working at a church anymore, I wasn’t able to attend.

I know some of you are blogging from the event, but maybe a few of you could post something here (or even just copy a post off your blog) so that all of us could interact at a central point.

I’m looking forward to this site being a good place for us to continue to have these kind of conversations into the future as we think about what it means to be Presbyterian and Emergent.

Presbymergent Stats and Mainline Emergent/s Bloggers

Just thought we’d give you a little update. Since the site has been up (only 4 days now), we now have 22 Contributors, 40 people who have subscribed to our RSS feed (7 to the comments), and had 150 hits just in the past 24 hrs. I’d say we’re doing pretty good. If you’d like to see who’s talking about us, check out Technorati or Google Blog Search. Thanks for spreading the word everyone!

Also, the Mainline Emergent/s event kicks off this afternoon – in case you didn’t read the article about Brian McLaren and the conference in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, you can download the PDF here (saves you from having to register with their site). There are going to be a fair amount of Presbymergents there and some may even be live-blogging the event. We will keep a list here. So if you are at the event, please leave a comment with your URL and we will get it posted. Hope everyone who is here in Atlanta can forgive us for the cold weather and enjoy the event!
