  1. When I first saw this conference advertised I was really excited. I’m going with my wife and her parents (her father is an EP). I look forward to the conference, meeting all sorts of my imaginary friends, and mulling the conference over with my clergy fam.

  2. This is an amazing conference that could make a lasting impact on the PCUSA. Go!

  3. I wish I could be with ya’ll. The conference sounds great. I am marching in our community’s annual fourth of July parade. Someone in a clergy shirt needs to be the statue of liberty!

  4. I want to see pictures of you as Lady Liberty!

  5. I wonder the theological differences between Emerging and Progressive church movements. It seems to me that the fomer originates from the evangelical camp and the latter stems from the mainline, which links to Phoenix Affirmation and the ministries coordinated by the Center of Progressive Christianity.

In his book and research “A New Spritual Home: Progressive Christianity and the Grass Roots”, professor Hal Taussig found in the mainline denominations about 700 quickly growing congregations that share the 5 characteristics - strong spiritual vitality, intellectual integrity, demographic diversity and transgressing gender boundaries, vitality without superiority, and strong value in social justice and ecology.

This conference “Church Unbound” does not seem to study the new church development regarding the progressive Christian churches. Or does it, just not explicitly?

  6. I really, really wanted to be there but with GA, my July schedule, and my wife’s own scheduled, if I wanted to see her at all in July I have to stay home. Have an awesome time!

  7. Tonyc,

I’ll be there, and I’m definitely part of the vital, progressive Christian movement.

  8. Carol,

I actually signed up for attending your workshop there. My wife involves in Sunday school teaching to junior youth at my church and very concerned about how PC(USA) works to reruit young generation. She is thinking to go to your workshop, too.

My wife and I as immigrants were originally trained in multicultural ministry. Our Christian belief had been / is progressive. Recently I read Jim Wallis’ and Brian McLaren’s books, beginning to notice the Emerging Church movement. Then I read Diana Butler Bass’ and your books and understood that the similar movement was also happening in the mainline churches.

I think Emerging and Progressive Church movements, although appearing to be similar in characteristics, have different origins regarding church history and are addressing different issues. In terms of inclusiveness and diversity, Progressive Church movement now in PC(USA) actually can be enriched by bridging with multicultural ministry of which the scope is greater than the racial/ethnic church models.

If you are interested, we may talk more when we meet at the conference.

  9. I’ve often heard Diana say, “But what are we emerging from?” That’s important to understand.

Let’s talk more. I look forward to meeting you and your wife next week.

  10. Hey ya’ll, I’m not Presbyterian, but I am Emergent and I’m in North Carolina. If any of you are coming through Charlotte this week on the way to the “Church Unbound” conference, give me a holler (704-689-2489). I’d love to meet/connect with some of you.

The Charlotte Emergent Cohort meets next Tuesday 7/8, just FYI:

  11. You all need to rethink where this whole emergent church is going. Have you ever considered that the Angel of Light would come out of our own churches. Think about it and read your Bibles.
