Church referral for NC

Hey all. MBCC has two families that have moved out to the NC Triangle and are looking for a community with whom that can take part. Any ideas, thoughts, etc.? Doesn’t have to be Presby, but certainly postmod and real. Multi-ethnic would also be plus. No moderns in postmodern drag need apply ;-)

Just trying to make it and help other do the same . . . as i go through life as a husband, father, son, grandchild, brother, 3rd Generation filipino/chinese american, pastor, mediocre guitarist and drummer, oakland a's FANatic, motorcycle enthusiast and total post-modern, culturally creative BOBO-fied Presbyterian follower of Jesus . . . or something like that?!?!?!

Here are a couple of suggestions:
Blacknall Memorial Presbyterian Church (http://www.blacknallpres.org/) in Durham is a fine church with a great history and wonderful people.
Chapel Hill Bible Church (www.biblechurch.org) is in the “Bible Church” netwwork and is a solid, energetic, conservative fellowship with a great staff and strong teaching ministry.

Steve — Just curious mostly, but what about Chapel Hill Bible Church (or Blacknall, for that matter) makes you consider it to be postmodern? As best I can tell from a quick run through of their website, they seem to be about as modern as it gets — which is great for someone looking for a “solid, energetic, conservative fellowship,” and I’m sure both are fine churches doing God’s work here on earth…but I’m guessing not quite what Bruce was requesting.

    Just a thought.

Bruce — what exactly does the “NC Triangle” consist of? The Portico is in Charlotte, if that’s anywhere close.

Best example I can offer is the Emmaus Way Community that Tim Condor is leading… http://www.emmaus-way.com/ (Can’t for the life of me remember how to code this to appear as a link.. sorry :( )

They are an offshoot of Chapel Hill Bible Church in much the same way Graceland (Vintage Faith) was from Santa Cruz Bible Church.

It’s really Tim Condor’s work at Emmaus Way that I had in mind in relation to Chapel Hill Bible. Neither of these churches are particularly “postmodern” — but both would be “friendly” to emergent folks. Frankly, I’m more concerned that people find something “solid” and “real”–along with being Christ-centered & missional of course.

  5. Thanks all! Very helpful. We head out there mid-july, so any more suggestions would b grand.

Having lived in Raleigh for 2 years in the 90s, with occasional visits since, most recently 2 weeks ago, the RTP Triangle area is well endowed with many more traditional churches, and not so many emergent expressions of Christian community (yet?) — they do have a Emergent Cohort (next meeting on 7/23) —
http://segue.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/06/raleighdurham_e.html — that’d be a good place to start connecting with people. Then again, being in the shadow of Duke University, there should be progressive pastors (and churches?) right there in the Durham area. I do enjoy an occasional visit to Duke Chapel http://www.chapel.duke.edu/home/ for more progressive inspirations (heard James Forbes there on Pentecost Sunday several yrs ago.)

And, since this is a Presbymergent blog, maybe the PCUSA church directory http://www.pcusa.org/search/churches/default.jsp can be of help too :) :)

Hey, I know this is late…but we are forming a core to plant a church in (hopefully) the in-town Durham area…near the Brightleaf/Tobacco District. It will be “reformed-light” – meaning won’t fight over it at all. I planted a church in Midtown, Atl around 9 years ago…and I am definately not “modern”. We want to hold close to the apostles creed, observe many of the ancient traditions, be transformative of individuals and community through Christ…and be real people wanting to walk in the way of Christ.

    Point people my way…
