Visit to Solomon’s Porch

This last weekend I was on vacation.  My wife and I took a little road trip to visit a friend in Minneapolis, and we also made a visit to Solomon’s Porch.  You can read a review of my experience here.  I have more to say than I could capture in just this one blog post, so I may do so on this forum here in a few days.

  1. Jim — This came up when Tony Jones spoke at the Cathedral a couple weeks ago. They use no mikes, even when Doug Pagitt is speaking and one of Tony’s points was that they want people to work hard to hear. He also mentioned that some slides are intentionally hard to read - again so people have to work hard.

These comments ticked several people off. It struck some as discriminatory. It struck others are simply anti-hospitable. A few felt like it was simply cocky/obnoxious.

My hunch is that the majority of that congregation is young/very young. Lots of babies in worship also make it hard to hear, even if you have perfect ears. So I guess it’s just their thing. And you are excluded if you can’t keep up.

  2. I recently visited Solomon’s Porch and met with Tony and Doug Paggit.

RE: their worship service and use of mics - Doug doesn’t where a mic, but there are three mics that hang above where he speaks (sort of like those above choirs in traditional churches).

Also - the congregation is young, but I spoke with many older members of the congregation who are committed participants at Solomon’s Porch.

  3. I did notice that in my visit and when they were used they were fairly effective. However much of what happened at the service did not occur from that position. When people spoke away from the microphones, some voices were heard but alot of them were not.
