Reforming Theology and Emergence

Hello,

I’m new to the presbymergent conversation…by way of quick introduction, I went to Fuller Seminary, where I became a Presbyterian. Yes, I am one of the few “converts” to Presbyterianism! ;) I was attracted by many aspects of the Reformed tradition, but especially the intellectual engagement with culture.

Later I got my Ph.D at Princeton Seminary. For nine years I was a professor at Bethel Seminary in Minnesota, where I met the Emergent facilitators (Tony and Doug), and got involved in various ways in Emergent conferences.

Now I am a professor of theology in Norway, where I am surrounded by Lutherans! ;) They hired me to help start a Ph.D. program in religion, ethics and society, and I have had several people indicate they would like to apply and do research on Emergent-like communities and theology here at Agder University.

For more details, see my blog: www.leronshults.typepad.com.

I am happy to join this conversation, not only because I am surrounded by Lutherans, and not only because I share with you an interest in emergent, but because I really believe that the Reformed tradition has much to offer in this ongoing global conversation. Not least is our commitment to “the church, reformed and always being reformed.”

I believe that we are called to embrace the delightful terror of reforming theology… not only reconstructing theology in dialogue with emerging culture, but also articulating theology in a way that is reformative, i.e., that opens us up to being reformed by God’s grace.

I look forward to the conversation!
